Vibration isolation
Some other projects use spring suspension systems with aluminium and magnets for
damping. While effective, that kind of setup takes up a lot of space and can be
costly due to custom-made parts.
I decided to follow the design used in the first STM and validated in Vitor
Barbosa’s STM: a heavy plate resting on top of an inner tube. The air-filled
cavity blocks high-frequency vibrations, since they dissipate into the gas
rather than reaching the scan head.
On top of that, I plan to add a magnetic levitation system like this one, integrated into the
shielding box to keep things compact.
